Adaptations...A Way of Life...

After gaining background knowledge of adaptations, squid, and the squid’s many adaptations, our class dissected squid earlier this week.  Based on your knowledge, which adaptation do you believe is the most important for the squid's survival?  (Be careful to give specific details to support your answer.) Please review the blog comment expectations found in the column to the right.

  1. I thing the squid was really gross in a way because I did all the work but I thought it
was cool to learn the parts of the squid and how the quid works and all their
defiance's like their ink sack and there back so they blend in with the sand to hide from predators trying to eat them and there ink sack is there last defense to get away from other animals that are trying to eat them so it was a really cool and gross experience to go through

  2. I think the adaptation that is most important to the squid is its tentacles. I think they are the most important adaptation to the squid because the squids tentacles have little suction cups at the end and and there tentacles are longer enabling it to real in pry. They are also the skinniest arms/tentacles on the squid.

  3. I think that the most important adaption of the squid is its skin for two reasons. First is when a predator is hunting from above the top of the squid is dark with black spots so the squid looks like the ocean floor. Second is when a predator is hunting from below the squid's the bottom skin is very bright so it looks like the top of the ocean. Aaron I.

  4. In my opinion, the most important adaptation for a squid is it’s camouflage skin. Being one of the smaller creatures that lives in the ocean, squids need to have a reliable way to hide from their predators. A squid’s skin is darker on the top of it’s body so that it blends in with the darker water below it, and lighter on the bottom so that it blends in with the lighter water above it. Also, since squids don’t have any defense mechanism other than their ink sack, which is so small and takes awhile to replenish, the last thing they need is to attract attention to their many predators. Squids have many other important adaptations to help them survive, but to me, camouflage is the most important.

  5. There are so many adaptations of a squid. An adaptation is something that helps the animal according to it’s environment. For example, some of the squid’s adaptations are it’s ink, it’s pen to keep it’s torpedo shape, it’s huge eyes that can see predators with a tiny blind spot, or its different skin tones on the top and bottom. In my opinion, I think that the pen inside that squid that keeps it’s torpedo shape, is the more important adaptation for a squid. Without the pen, the squid would be slow and the body would be deformed. It would flop around in the water and would be eaten by predators right away. That is why I think the squid’s pen is the best adaptation it has.

  6. I believe the most important part id a squid's body for survival is it tentacles. All of it tentacles have suction cups, two of its tentacles are longer than the rest, they are for catching food like fish or other prey. The tentacles act like grappling hooks and then they deliver the squids foods into its beak. The tentacles are a very key role in a squids life, without it could not catch or grab food.

  7. After the dissection and learning more background information about the squid, I think that adaptation that helps the squid the most is the fins. They are the things that make the squid swim. They give the squid some control over where it wants to go. They are the only steering squids have. Without them, squids wouldn't be able to swim straight and flop all over the place. They would have no way to escape predators and couldn't hunt very well either. If they got used to it, it would take way more effort than it would with them. Clearly, fins are essential to the squids survival.

  8. The squid adaption I think is the most important for the squids survival is its eyes. The squid’s large eyes help it detect even the smallest amounts of light deep under the sea where it usually is. The eyes are also a part of the squids camouflage, helping hide it from predators. Its eyes are very large and easy to see, so it tries to hide them from predators by reflecting light away from them. From researching, the squid can see 120 meters away, making it easy to spot predators. The squids eyes are very important for its survival.

I think that the thing that best adaption of the squid is the pen because it helps the squid say where it wants to go. I also think that it is the pen because without it the squid would be all floppy, it would be like us without any bones. They would not be able to move, and the pen helps the squid to not spiral out of control like a football, there is no telling what it will do. So the squid needs the pen to stay upright.

  10. I think that the greatest adaptation that the squid has to help it survive is its way it gets its food and without it the squid would die. How the squid gets it food is, the tentacles grab its food then it uses its arms to hold the food in place so the beak can get of a piece of food from its prey. The tentacles are longer than the arms so the squid is able to capture its prey because its arms aren't long enough. They also have suckers that actually grab the prey so it can't get loose. Then the tentacles give the prey to the arms which hold it in place with it suckers as well. After that the beak in, in my opinion the most important, it takes off pieces of the food so it can digest it. The beak only takes a little pieces out of the prey, because if the squid swallows too much because the esophagus is attached to the brain which would hurt it severely. So with out these adaptations the squid would die very quickly.

  11. I believe that the most important adaptation to the squid is that they can camouflage with the sand at the bottom of the ocean or the water in the ocean. I think that this is the most important because if they couldn’t camouflage than they would get eaten more than they do now and could possibly become endangered. Also the squid needs camouflage so they can sneak up on the prey below them. This works because the prey is looking up not seeing the squid because it is camouflaged with the water, so the squid can sneak up without them seeing it.

  12. The many adaptations of the squid are its ink bag. The ink bag, the squid uses when it’s all out of moves to get away from predators. It comes out the tube which can let go air, waste, and of course inc. On cartoons it says,”aww! I inked my self!” But not really. The squid has full control over when he/she has to do it. That is the most important because when he/she inks, that makes a cloud of ink in the water to get away and it temporarily blinds the predator. Also it doesn’t do it so much because the ink bag takes up to 3 months to fill all the way up.

  13. I think that the ink sack is the most important. The ink sack is located near the bottom hole which allows it to squirt out ink. This adaptation allows it to escape predators. It shoots out ink and blinds it's pursurer, giving it a chance to run away.

  14. I think the squid's greatest adaptation was it's beak. If the squid didn't
have a beak then the squid could not survive because it needs food. If an animal
doesn't eat anything then they lose nutrients and protein which makes the squid tired
if he doesn't eat. Without food a squid would die. That's why I think squid 's most important adaptation is the beak.

  15. I think the most important adaptation of the squid is the beak. I think it is the beak because the esophagus is placed right between the two parts of the brain so without the beak they would not be able to survive. They would not be able to survive because if they ate something too big then it could hurt their brain. That is what I think is the most important adaptation.

  16. I think the squids most important adaptation is the ink sac. It helps them catch prey, and it also helps them run away from predators. It protects them and also saves them.

  17. One adaptation that is crucial to the squids survival is camouflage. The squid has camouflage all over its body. It’s skin can blend in with what is below it when a predator is above it it is sand or a dark color. When a predator is blow it, it is a light color so it can blend in with the sunlight. All in all, the squid's is an important part of it's adaptations.

  18. I think the most important adaption of the squid is the skin on the front and back of the squid. There skin is like camouflage for them, this is so if any predators look down from the top of the ocean the back of the squid will look like the dark bottom of the ocean. And if any predators look up from the bottom of the ocean the bottom of there skin is light pinkish brown so if looks like the top of the ocean. This helps the squid so that its predators cant see it and attack.

  19. I believe that squids have lived for a long time to be able to have so many adaptations. I believe the ink sac is the most important because it is able to escape from predators

  20. Well, I think, that the most important adaption is how it has a small beak so that when it swallows it does not get too big of a bite and damage it’s brain. When you look at the beak the mouth ball covers half of it, even if it didn’t it’s beak is very small. This is good because when it swallows, to get to it’s stomach it goes in between the two sides of it’s brain. If the squid got too big of a bite it could damage either side of the brain. So it’s small beak helps it so it does not die from brain damage.

  21. I think that a squid's most important adaptation is it's ink sac. I think this because if a squid is ever in danger or can't get out of a situation they can always use their ink to protect them. Or get away from a pretidor that might try to eat them. Without a squids ink sac most people wouldn't even know what the creater (squid) is. This is all why I believe that a squid's most important adaptation is it's ink sac.

  22. Dear Mrs.Blake,
What I learned was that the squid has not as many intestines.
The smallest part of the mother squid is the ink sack.
The biggest part of the mother squid is the egg sack and intestines.
The most important part of the squid other than the heart is the ink sack.
The ink sack is used for protection and when a squid inks it either swims up or down and gets away from the predator that is trying to eat it.
Another part of the squid is the eye lense.
The eye lens holds the eye together so the eyeball does not mush out of its mantle.

  23. I think that the squid's most important, or useful adaptation is it's ink sac, I think this because the ink sac is the squids main defense against predators. Also because without it they would be dead meat for predators, as it is there only defense.Overall i think that the ink sac is its most important adaptation out of its many like its small beak, the way it jets forward to swim, and its camouflage.

  24. I think the best adaptation for a squid would be its ink sac. I think this would be the best adaptation because it protects them. When when a squids predator approaches then when they get to close it will ink and that helps them get away fast because it will get into the predator's eyes and cause them to act blind for a minute while the squid gets away. The good thing about the squid as well as octopus is that they only ink when they have to so when a predator come they won't ink but when it comes right up to them then they will ink because it takes a while for the ink sac to rebuild so if the use it for no reason then maybe in a few minutes if they need it they won't be able to.

  25. After learning/dissecting the squid I think the most important adaptation is the arms. The arms are used to pull the food the squids mouth. Then the squid’s beak will rush the food into a size that fits through the squid’s digestive system.

  26. Now that I have learned more about the squids adaptations the one thing that I think is the most important one would be the Ink sac because it helps defend the squid from any large predators. It also gives time to the squid to get away from harms way.

  27. Now that I have learned more about the squids adaptations the one thing that I think is the most important is the beak because it helps rip tar the food. That is the most intriguing thing i learned about the squide

  28. I think the adaptation that helps the squid the most is the arms. One of the reasons I think that is it could grip a fish and pull it towards its beak. Also the squid could blend into a rock and not fall off by gripping on the rock. Lastly it’s the main source of getting food so it could stick onto a bigger fish. That is why I think the arms are the most important adaptation for the squid.

  29. From what I have learned from the squid dissection is I think that when the squid (Boy or Girl) is being chased and they are trying to get away they try to swim some more and then spray some ink at the predator from the ink sack and then the swim the other way and try the blend in the the rocks and sand on the bottom of the ocean floor.

  30. From my background knowledge the squids most important adaptation for survival would have to be when predators come close and try to eat the squid the squid can squirt them with ink from there ink sack from in between the gills and swimming underneath the ink allowing squids to get away from harm. This adaption is very important because it is only activated by when a squid is threatened by a predator “ a meat eater” or any other threat allowing the function of the ink sack to be one of the squids best adaptations for survival.

I would pick Nuclear of the 9 other power or energy sources because of first that just ten pounds of Nuclear could power the united states which means if i just powerd the city i would be more than fine and it won't cost not that much not to mention its not hard to get. but its made up of little tiny atoms called atom 235 pick one side or the other one and the one that they go to stays there and does not equal out to the other side lead nuclear dangerous to tamper with meaning you don't really want to mess with it.

  32. The most important thing for the squids survival is its mantle.I said the mantle because it helps the squid glide through the water if it is trying to escape from a preditor.
